Jesus claimed the title, ‘Son of Man’

Jesus claimed the title Son of Man

“The king proclaims the Lord’s decree: “The Lord said to me, ‘You are my son.     Today I have become your Father.” – Psalm 2:7

Jesus did not like the term, ‘Son of David’, the popular designation of the Messiah.  He knew that He was ‘the Son of God and during His trial before the Sanhedrin, He acknowledged this.  However, He did like the term ‘Son of Man’ – again and again He said it —

“But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.” – Matthew 8:20

“” So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” – Matthew 9:6

“For the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!” Matthew 12:8

“Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with great power and glory.” – Mark 13:26

Even in the book of Ezekiel, God described Jesus as the Son of Man —

“Son of man,” he said, “I am sending you to the nation of Israel, a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me. They and their ancestors have been rebelling against me to this very day.” – Ezekiel 2:3

“Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for Israel. Whenever you receive a message from me, warn people immediately.” – Ezekiel 3:17

Especially significant were the passages about a remnant to be spared; the new heart and spirit; the new everlasting covenant; and the promise that the Gentile nations would come to know the Lord, God of Israel.  All these were to be fulfilled by Jesus, as Son of Man.

What about Daniel use of the title, ‘Son of Man’.  There it was an Aramaic term, bar enash, instead of ben Adam.  The words of Daniel are clear enough —

“As my vision continued that night, I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence.  He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal—it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.” Daniel 7:13-14
