The Promise of Blessing fulfilled

the promise of blessing fulfilled“Abraham was now a very old man, and the Lord had blessed him in every way.”  – Genesis 24:1

Near the close of Abraham’s life we hear this wonderful testimony – what exactly were the ways in which Abraham had been blessed?

1. Abraham’s servant makes the first point —

“And the Lord has greatly blessed my master; he has become a wealthy man. The Lord has given him flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle, a fortune in silver and gold, and many male and female servants and camels and donkeys.” – Genesis 24:35

It is important to note that in many parts of the world blessing is commonly thought of as a magical force or a mystical power by which someone can obtain desired benefits.  Advocates of the so-called “prosperity gospel” may have more in common with this worldview which reduces blessing to a method of obtaining wealth from God.

2.  Abimelech makes the second point —

“About this time, Abimelech came with Phicol, his army commander, to visit Abraham. “God is obviously with you, helping you in everything you do,” Abimelech said.” – Genesis 21:22
