Eagle’s Wing Speech

“Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation”. — Exodus 19:5-6

The verse above culminates the the famous “Eagle’s Wing Speech” that Moses gives to describe how God carried His chosen people from Egypt like eagles who transports their young who are learning how to fly.

So the “now therefore” declares that because of this amazing grace received the “if” is to be followed – obey and keep.  Then comes the three ministries God specifies – treasured possession, kingdom of priests, and a holy nation.

Treasured Possession: The fact is that God’s people are in fact to be part of His family, like a son, very special indeed and if you understand the culture of a first-born, there comes with it a sense of intimacy mixed in with a tremendous amount of purpose.

Kingdom of Priests:  This is where the missionary role comes through very clearly – our function, on behalf of the kingdom of God are to be mediators between God and the nations.

A Holy Nation:  Holiness is wholeness – to be holy is be wholly the Lord’s.  We are set apart not only in our personal lives but also in our service.  We have two relations – one towards God and the other towards the nations – almost like an ambassador for all the times and for all the peoples – set apart.

If there was a NT verse to describe this same relationship it would be Peter’s description found in 1 Peter 2:9 – a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people.  It points tot he continuity of God’s purpose and plan – declare the wonderful deeds of Him who called them out of darkness into His marvelous light.
