Missionary Call

Discerning-Your-Call“I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”  —  Genesis 12:3

There is a popular misconception that the Old Testament does not have a missionary mandate and that it is a book dedicated only to the Jews and their history.  If we doubt that God’s promise to Abraham was global in scope and universal in its offer, we should note that the “families” which were scattered throughout the earth appear in Genesis chapter 10 and are the backdrop for God’s promise.

The Old Testament records the phenomenon of Gentiles coming to faith.  Melchizedek would be one example, Jethro another, add to them Balaam and of course we cannot forget Jonah’s mission to Nineveh.

God’s missionary message to the people of Israel is also God’s call to us.

  1. To Proclaim His Plan to Bless the Nations – Genesis 12:3
  2. To Participate in His Priesthood as Agents of That Blessing – Exodus 19:4-6
  3. To Prove His Purpose to Bless all the Nations – Psalm 67
